Coexistence, Collaboration, and Sustainable Success

The Somali Diaspora Youth (SDY) would like to invite students and young professionals who are interested in the future of Somalis in the diaspora and the homeland.

Youth are invited to submit abstract for one or more of the below topics to be presented at the 7th Annual SDY Conference to be held at Marriott hotel (Virginia) on Saturday January 27, 2018.

The overarching theme for this year’s conference is Coexistence, Collaboration, and Sustainable Success. Embedded in this overarching theme is the urgency to focus on solutions as we come and work together and put forward concerted efforts to address community issues in general, and youth challenges in particular.

In this one-day event, the participants will partake and lead discussions and listen to each other and experts on topics pertaining to various issues of importance and pertinent to Somali youth and community as a whole. Furthermore, they would develop action plans to work together and identify lessons learned that can be applied….

Paving Pathway would have the following seven core sub-themes and/or streams:

  1. Activism & Empowerment
  2. Rising Above Islamophobia
  3. Muslim Ban
  4. Human Rights
  5. Building Alliances
  6. Duty of Service & Positive Political Engagement
  7. Role of the Young Generation in Reconciliation

Topics in the above seven sub-themes and streams will enhance our understanding of issues and challenges facing Somali Diaspora youth and community at large; and explore how to change these challenges into feasible opportunities and solutions.
